1894: On October 8th he was born in Wisconsin the 2nd son of Charles Hiram and Anna Della (Colby) Owens.
1900 Census: Living in Manchester, Boone, Illinois with father, mother, and 2 brothers (Horace and Ward). age 5.
1910 Census: Living in Whitewater, Walworth, Wisconsin with father, mother, 3 brothers and 1 sister (Ward, Horace, Irwin and Doris). age 15
1920 Census: Living in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota with wife and 2 daughters (Jessie and Lucille). age 25
1930 Census: Living in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin with wife, 3 daughters and 2 sons (Jessie, Lucille, Charlotte, Charles and Lyle Jr).
1937: Mrs Lyle Owens dies on 16 November 1937 in Beloit, Wisconsin.
1940 Census: Living in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a lodger. He is listed as widowed.
1942: Drafted into WW2 and had a Hazel Owens that would always know his address. Hazel was his new wife, but when did they marry?
1950 Census: Living in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a Guard at the Vocational school. Living with Hazel his wife.
1985: December 8th he died in Dousman, Waukesha, Wisconsin.
We know that the children are not living with him so I attempted to find them in 1940 and this is what I found:
Jessie K Owens born 1917 in Wisconsin- Not found. She could have married, but unknown at this time to whom
Lucille Owens born 1919 in Wisconsin- Not found. She could have married as well, but unknown at this time to whom.
Charlotte Owens: Living in Muskego Town, Waukesha, Wisconsin as a welfare child in the household of Elmer Williams.
Charles Owens: Living in West Allis City, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a boarder in the household of Earl Gagnie.
Lyle Jr : Living in the Wautosa City, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as an inmate at the St. Aemilians Orphanage.
A few questions I have are:
Why aren't the children together? What is a Welfare Child? Why is Lyle Jr at an Orphanage when it's obvious his father is still living?
