  1. Tina, this is a good chronological outline of 'your' Benjamin Schoonover. There were enough Benjamins in the vicinity to require sorting them out with as much in the way of tax lists, land, estate and sundry record as may be found.

I think you have attributed the 1790 US Census enumeration for Lower Smithfield to the wrong Benjamin. I and a cousin have attributed this enumeration to a Benjamin b. 1741 to Nicholas and Peternella (Westfall) Schoonover. This Benjamin is documented as buying Lower Smithfield land, and enumerated next to him for 1790 is his son-in-law.

See documentation of this Benjamin's life-path here:

Given a chance, many Schoonovers left pretty good records!

  2. Thanks. I am grateful to the Schoonover's for leaving us great records for back in these times. I, myself, being a Schoonover by blood and a Chase by marriage so maybe we can leave our mark just like they did.

  3. Tina:
I am a 4th-great grandson of Benjamin Schoonover and Catherine Clendenning.
Would you be willing to share your source for the information regarding the 1799 marriage of Benjamin Schoonover to Catherine Clendenning?
[1799: married Catherine Clendenning in Tioga Center, Tioga, New York. age 28]
My family has spent years trying to track down Catherine's parents and ancestors, but keep hitting brick walls.
I can be reached via email at cef22664@gmail.com
    Thanks.
